Not sure how something like this ended up here. It definitely doesn't look Japanese, and is quite old. It had to have come from a rift.

Considering the theme, they may be based on the Isle of Lewis Chessmen.

Then possibly much older than I expected, if they're the real deal.

That means they'd also thematically fit with the drinking horn Dirk had found.

Do you know anything about the possibility of travel through the rift?

It's definitely possible. We've already done it. We had to go to the Underworld.

So this latest rift must be related to ancient Scandinavia. I never considered these rifts crossing time, only space. But after we went to the Underworld and back through one, anything is possible.</font?

In my world, it's possible. So I expect it to be possible elsewhere.

Though if this is the case, then it means time and space alike are endangered by these rifts.

Before arriving here, I travelled what's known as the Akarana Corridor. A pathway between worlds and time. When we needed to go to the Underworld, I was going to see if I could possibly access it again. It would take a tremendous amount of power I know I can't access on my own. Luckily, we found the source rift and entered that way.

Closing rifts forever would mean not just safeguarding this world, but others. And if we could control it ourselves, we might be able to voluntarily travel as opposed to pulling Outsiders in at random, or "sending them home" out of nowhere.

Is that a desire you have because of a bond you've made with someone here?

I'd be lying if I said that didn't have something to do with it.

I do also plan to stay here in this world and time, even if we do manage to solve the rift issue. So I really don't want to vanish out of nowhere myself, either.

But those selfish desires are far less a priority than keeping kaiju out, or rift poison harming people.

In other words, even after we solve the issue, you don't believe the job will be done. Yeah, I guess there always is an epilogue to a story.

But is this also not a selfish desire? If you came up with it, then isn't it something that you want to do?

If wanting to make sure I can do whatever I can to make this world safer is selfish, then I guess I am.

I had important work back home, too, but I can't return. In my wake, someone will take over my duties. Here, we're already dwindling in numbers. I'm needed here more than there.

Saving the world isn't inherently selfless. All that matters is whether or not you want to do it, above all the other options.

I do want to. I couldn't return home knowing how much help this world will always need, and knowing I could have done something about it.
