@rubber ducky

It has come to my attention that the plugsuits we wear for protection against Rift energy is outdated by more than a few decades. What little upgrades the suits have been given over the years amount to minor fixes and cosmetic changes. Some researchers of the Alexandria Institute have indicated an interest in producing a better plugsuit using materials from the kaiju as a basis for the improvements, and I believe we ought to collaborate with them.

Given LILITH's inefficient bureaucracy, this is an initiative that we Outsiders ought to head ourselves. Not only do we have personal experience with the plugsuits, we also have capable individuals who can contribute significantly to the research itself.

[ Is he tooting his own horn here? Absolutely. But he also means the other Outsiders who have non-combat expertise, many of whom he's spoken to or already gotten assistance from for his own research and projects. ]

Additionally, not all of us have skills oriented towards battle, and often I find myself unhappy with my ability to contribute in that regard.

Thus, I propose that we establish a research team, focusing on not only on kaiju research of our own, but on solving the issues plaguing this planet that LILITH does not have the capacity to attend to. There are any number of projects we can tackle—the plugsuit, the planet's environmental destruction, greater defenses for our bases, and much more.

If you have any interest in joining the research team, inform me immediately. I will administer a short interview to determine your suitability, but you need not be a specialist in research to join. A team requires individuals of many skills, including administrative, or for the less academically inclined, those who can procure the materials we need for our studies.

Of course, if you believe this to be of little use, or an exercise in futility, I would like to hear your argument. No great plan has ever been set into motion without debate and intense scrutiny.

[ he wasn't going to join the conversation about science and research originally, but... the craftsmen should DEFINITELY unionize. ]

What kind of tools? Our employers gave me permission to keep a forge, so I'll be making some for myself when we get back, and I can maybe outfit you too...

[His good old buddy from his plastic-burning days! Ah, those were some good times.]

Really? Are you making me a full suit of armor? I would be indebted to you (happily) if you did! And I'll enchant yours as thanks!

[ The people weren't ready for their wisdom, sadly. ]

Hah, get me materials and a proper design, and I can bang something out for you no problem. It'll be a lot of iron, fair warning.

Tools first, though. What's the list?

Scissors for all sorts of materials, including leather. I'm not much of a leatherworker, but I'm going to have to do some cutting here and there. Small knives for carving. Something that won't break bone. I'll nerd plenty of special screws to make sure nothing falls apart.

I might need to look around for the specialized equipment.

Leather and bone, got it. You gonna be working stone or wood at all?

Also, the screws might be best sourced elsewhere, just because they're a pain to hand-tool in any significant quantity and I don't have an apprentice to put to work on 'em. Would you consider rivets instead? I can make a ball-pein in my sleep.

[ hey did you know a ball-pein hammer is a real thing and it has its own wikipedia page because i really hate that fact also wikipedia spells it ball-peen but i cant have that in my search history so we're going to defer to ffxiv here thanks ]

Wood and stone isn't all that conductive to magic, unless you've worked on it enough to turn it into a work of art. I can infuse magic into clothes, by the way, but I'm not a tailor.

Rivets! Perfect for my larger projects. I'm glad I made an acquaintance with an expert blacksmith as yourself.

[ :)!!! he already liked this guy from the cosplay project, but now he likes him even more. flattery aint worthless if it WORKS ]

Hah, see, I'm still not convinced you're not a mage when you talk like that, but you know your craft better than me.

I may have to charge you for materials for anything that's a consumable eventually, but your custom's always welcome.

[ Absolutely no question that this kaiju hunt WILL go well and WILL end in success, definitely. he can't freaking wait to go home and work. ]
