[text] @goddess of death
Greetings everyone. I am contacting you on behalf of Nicholas D. Wolfwood (user name: punisher).
He recently made a post offering his services as a priest to those who wish to confess their sins. While admirable, the payment he asks in return for such a service is unacceptable. Normally he should be chastised for such behavior, however the money he hopes to earn through his service is to be used for a noble cause: helping the orphaned children of this world. I believe this cause to be an important one and he deserves to be commended for having decided to take it on!
Unfortunately, he lacks the confidence to ask for donations, hence his resorting to selling what should be a sacred service for money. He is convinced nobody will help him, as people typically never give anything away without the expectation of getting something back.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could reassure him that the people in this world are generous. While nothing is prepared yet to receive donations, I am sure he will feel heartened to see the kindness and benevolence we are all capable of. I will personally donate some of my own money when the time comes.
Thank you for your time.

You need not give money you do not have, Dan Heng. Simply posting your thoughts on the matter did a lot to help him see generosity does exist in that world, I'm sure. And your offer to help gather and build will achieve much more than money alone would.
[ Hopefully WW won't spend it all in cigarettes. ]
And ah, I simply have a specific conception of sacred duties. I believe they should not be done with a gain in mind. My sister asks precious jewels in exchange for her services, and she is the worst goddess in existence.
sorry
but you really comparing me to other gods? I'm a human, ya know.

[ The sister problems are palpable here. ]
no subject
what'd your sister do to you?
no subject
Either you think too poorly of humans, either you think too highly of gods.
[ Perhaps both. ]
She is the most incompetent, laziest and evil goddess in all of mesopotamia. She will cause a world-ending disaster once a year without even trying. I could not begin to list everything she did, it would be endless.

Damn, even the sibling thing sounds familiar.]
so why don't you stop her?
no subject
[ She's not proud of it, but she did it! ]
Unfortunately, the other gods were very insistent I revive her.
They spoil her way too much.
They bend all of the rules for every of her whims.
[ The sister who's spent all of her life working dutifully, suffering in silence? Hey forget her, let her rot down there. The bratty sister who throws a tantrum whenever she doesn't have what she wants? Why, bend the very rules of reality for her! Bah. ]
no subject
[So better than Vash then.]
Wait, you can revive people? Why didn't you tell them to shove it? Sounds like you did the world a favor.

Unfortunately, she is the goddess of fertility too, amongst other things.
Humans on the surface stopped doing...
C
Certain things better left unnamed.
It could have potentially led to the extinction of mankind if she remained death.
And I did not want that.
[ To say Ishtar is lazy is probably inaccurate, really. It's just that what she does for her duties is, um. Well. Hrm. Coughs.
... By far and large things Ereshkigal doesn't consider to be real work! Sighs. ]

[Damn. He's been angry for a long time, angry at his god for being so damn hands off and letting him suffer, for letting all of them suffer. But maybe that's better than having a god sprinkling people with horny dust and filling bellies with babies.
But he can see how that would definitely be it's own kind of world ending.]
Gods can't swap jobs?
no subject
That was a long time ago.
[ The Age of Gods is over, Ishtar's on permanent vacation now like every other god. Except death gods, they don't get breaks even when their age is over. ]
Y
You're asking a lot of questions, you know?
Am I being interrogated here?
no subject
nah, just call it a professional curiosity. pictured the devil before but you aren't matching the image.

That is what most people assume.

I see. So the aid here was more social in nature. Glad to help, then. [He just hopes Wolfwood isn’t too embarrassed being put on blast like this by a Goddess of Death. Dan Heng himself might just simply combust in the same situation.
Surely he wouldn’t spend the donations on that…]
Ah. So it struck a personal chord with you. I apologize for overstepping. And…I’m sorry about your sister. [Eresh is so humble in comparison….how did that happen…not his business.]
Intent is important in these things, it’s true. It’s just not something that’s always clear. Still, Mr. Priest has had good advice. Intent to aid the children goes in hand with what we’ve discussed as well; moving beyond the past, and doing what you can for the future.
It is good to have a reminder that there are people who want to help around here; some just may not know how.

It would be like being sorry for a storm.
Some things just exist and cause trouble even if they don't mean to.
[ On the bright side, if Ishtar is ever summoned as an outsider, her reputation will already be made for her thanks to her sister! ]
That's true.
When I first arrived I did not speak with many people either.
I assumed they would hate me.
Through the misfortune that is our circumstance, we are fortunate to have such good allies.

[Truly Dan Heng is gonna side-eye Ishtar so hard if she ever shows up here lmaoooo]
We are, I agree. I do find text to be easier to communicate with...more time to construct my thoughts. But it's still been great to work alongside good people.
I...want to ask, though. You do not have to answer, Lady Eresh, but. Why would you assume people you haven't even met would hate you? [Aside from nearly deafening him upon meeting, she's been rather pleasant company??]

Death is the greatest of humanity's evils.
The one they can never overcome, only delay.
And when they try to, it always comes at a terrible cost.
So they blame those who represent death for their suffering.
This is how it was in my world.
Even though I do not directly takes lives,
The blame for this evil lies with me.
I assumed this might be the same here.
I am glad to have been proven wrong.
why does he always get so Like This with her...sorry Eresh. Have more affirmation.
[Aaaaaaah....this is making alot more sense now.]
I wouldn't consider death 'evil', Lady Ereshkigal. In fact...where I'm from, it truly is considered as something welcome. The people of the Xianzhou Luofu are incredibly long lived. Near immortal. It...caused many hardships. Those who lived too long became sick, losing their minds...
[A shell of a man, hunting him down across the cosmos to demand the death he's constantly denied...]
A terrible cost indeed. Death is necessary, I think. All things need an end. Even if it is painful...it makes one cherish what they have, now.
....things I'm sure you know already. Still. As a goddess of death, I think it is a valuable service you provide. The gods of my world care little for the mortals in their care. They just...are. I believe many where I'm from would be comforted to know someone as kind as you oversaw something so unknowable such as death.
...sorry. I suppose it's a topic I'm rather opinionated on. Thank you for sharing, Lady Ereshkigal. I...hope your burden can be a little lighter here.
finally someone thinks death is good
What you describe is a scenario I fear for humanity.
While the body can be made to survive for ages,
The mind is not made to handle near immortality.
Even gods must die eventually, after all.
If death never comes, life becomes a prison.
One that drives people to stagnation or madness.
[ Mind you when she says "humanity," she means more the concept of humanity rather than a specific specie. ]
I'm sorry to hear such a fate has befallen your people.
I hope it will not befall you.
Death is good and necessary!!
…I see. So that is a tragedy possible in other worlds…you are correct. Many fear death so much that they push themselves to a fate much worse.
The gods of my world, aeons. They are more…concepts, than people like you. They can “die” in a sense more like fading or being absorbed into a stronger entity. But I suppose that lack of permanence supports your point.
While death is not something I seek at this point in time, I know it is necessary, for all the reasons you have stated. People must move forward to actually live after all.
I…thank you, for your sympathies, Lady Ereshkigal.
Do not worry. As a Vidyadhara, I am part of a cycle of “death” and rebirth. That is how we have avoided madness, even if we do still tend to live a long time. It is not indefinite.
While it’s likely unnatural, death is still necessary, even with this. A clean slate, as it were.
[Some slates cleaner than others, but......]
