[ It almost feels a little bit surreal in this dark back alley, the sounds from the street very nearly hushed, and Silco's dart down, and he catches the motion, but watches his fingers pause, not quite following the impulse. He can only imagine what it was. People always had two reactions, they either found it terrifying, or they found it fascinating.

He wondered which one Vergilius was. ]

It is what happens when an open wound finds itself exposed to the river Pilt, and all the toxins therein start to meld with open flesh and blood.

[ He paused, considering his words more carefully than usual. ]

I was drowned in that river, on that day. It is a reminder of many lessons I was forced to learn — survival most of all.

[Classic Backstreet talk. Fixer talk, too. Funny how some things change between worlds, and how some others are depressingly the same.]

[Silco was almost drowned, and suffered for the rest of his life for it. For factors out of his control. Another mild twitch of his hand.]

[ Silco's lips twitched. ]

Why? [ His tone still bitter, but there's a soft wheeze of a laugh. ] Without the lessons I learned, or the drive it gave me, I never would have gotten as close as I've been to grasping everything that I dreamed of doing. Without this —

[ He pointed to it, that scar, like a rotting, stringy thing. ] — I would have never learned to become what I had to, to find a path forward for Zaun.

I thanked him for it, the man who did this to me. Right before I drove a knife in his back, to thank him for the lesson.

[ A twitch of a smile. ] In the end, my argument for the future of Zaun won. I would give more if necessary, to make that point and put us on the right path.
