[ He sends her an invitation to
the metaverseLAUNCH DATAVERSE?, because there's some things that just shouldn't be relayed through written word. ]no subject
Well, there's no harm in accepting and pressing "yes."
Hopefully. ]

The program has to go through all its usual steps for any first-time connections; downloading, patching, integrating the software into implants, but eventually the artificial environment begins to swell and spread like a carpet of flowers blossoming between them.
Except,
the desert is scalding, splitting-painful hot. The sun a merciless and thoughtless eye in the sky that radiates naught but burning pain upon flesh, and the golden-red sands below foot burn just as hot. It's like suffocating, desiccating, being stricken blind and mute with the sudden wash of arid climate.
And then there is cool shade, sudden and refreshing that towers over her as the rest of the setting loads in. A warm patch of green, waters pale and draped across a basin in the desert. And Set, wearing his dark animal-faced helm, gold jewelry and black shendyt, stands firm and resolute nearby. He's not a very welcoming individual, stern-browed and severe-mouthed, but his hands are held together in an effort not to curl them into claws.
( Ereshkigal, even digitized, is a powerful goddess. He can fuck with Ishtar all the time, but he would not tangle with her... sister โ not without adequate preparation! ) ]
โ Quetzalcoatl is dead. I met her in another life, at the end of existence, and she was killed as only gods can be. Obliterated from all memory.
I understand this may mean little to you without context, but I promised I would not let her memory pass unforgotten and unmourned. I am simply fulfilling that promise, now. You are the first of many I must inform.
[ drop a bomb now, then get to the goofy hijinx later ]

Still, she puts herself together. This is a serious moment and she must listen to what he says. So that's the man she had been talking to, huh? He certainly has a flair for the dramatic. So does she, so she can't really criticize him. She wonders if she can use that function to enhance her usual introduction...
She also wonders if he's a god, or pretending to be one. Gods have the most flair for dramatic entrances like that. ]

... I see.
[ She closes her eyes solemnly and brings a hand to her chest. ]
Did humanity - the world - perish?
[ That is the only way she can imagine the memory of Quetzalcoatl could have been erased from all memory. The implication being that she comes from another timeline or the future. The latter would not be all too surprising: the end of all things is an inevitability. It is death that gives beauty to life, after all. Otherwise, life would be nothing but a neverending nightmare. ]

[ He says it with an almost bored tone, something built up to hide the exhaustion that plagued him โ the rapid heel-turn of reality from its end to this partial-end in Neo Tokyo was throwing him off. Still, he knows he needs to convey Quetzalcoatl's demise properly; he had adored her, after all. She had given him her care and consideration, a promise that he'd always known she'd never be able to keep. Telling her companions about her was one thing, her people another, and other gods still another. ]
A human killed her. As a result, I fear we may be the only ones who can remember that she ever existed.
[ Slowly, he reaches up to draw off his mask; it shifts in his fingers, falling like liquid between them โ like soft, gleaming sands โ and leaves him bare-faced and red-haired, looking to Ereshkigal with a mouth held in a harsh line. ]
I know you may not recognize me, nor know the weight of the battle she and I were fighting, but... she meant a lot to me. This is my way of paying respect to her name.

He loved her. ]
...
[ Even though she'd not spent of a lot of time with her, the news of Quetzalcoatl's death is sad. But she's used to such things. Death is always sad, yes that's what she is. As she who reigns over the afterlife, she sees the necessity of death. The beauty and meaning it gives life. Even gods must die someday. A world free of death... It would be nothing but a nightmare.
But this? That would make her cry if she wasn't alone. The heartbreak or losing the one you cherish... It's one of the most painful emotion, isn't it? ]
Thank you for sharing this with me. Please believe me when I say Quetzalcoatl shall not be forgotten.
[ Everyone dies, everything ends. Even memories of what once was will be erased someday. This is inevitable. But for so long as she keeps existing, she will remember her. ]
I knew her for her boundless love toward humans, for her strength when faced with challenges, and for the joy she brought where she walked. [She marks a pause and closes her eyes.] And I know she would wish for you to know happiness again.

If she were to pin him with what she realizes, he would be forced to admir to it. That he had loved and still loved Quetzalcoatl. ]
She was my family.
[ Family he got to choose. ]
All that you say, she was. My happiness is inconsequential compared to her memory. She was a god of humanity, in the way that her brother and I are not.
[ Quietly, he holds himself apart and then. A frown builds between his eyes, to his mouth again; he looks away momentarily, across the deserts and laughs wryly. Mentioning Tezcatlipoca reminds him of something. ]
โ I am Set, Egypt's god of war.
no subject
My happiness is inconsequential compared to her memory.
She's confident Quetzalcoatl would disagree with this. And as Goddess of Death, she would agree with her. The living losing joy following the passing of their loved one... This is something she is all too familiar with. ]
Set. God of War. If you truly wish to honor her memory... [A pause.] Then never say such words again.
[ She takes a step forward and tries taking his hands with her own. She knows her social skills are still abysmal, but she can't stay silent when hearing this. This is not what her friend would want. And this is not what death should bring about. ]
She would weep, were she to hear you speak of your own happiness in such terms. Quetzalcoatl was a goddess of joy. Her life, her deeds, her love- She would wish for her memory to be a source of happiness, not a shadow that deprives you of it.
[ To truly honor her would be to live a life filled with joy, fighting for the future of humanity and enjoying every moment to the fullest. Of course, that's easier said than done. The pain of losing one you love never goes away, she knows as much. If it were to happen to her... She likely would be far worse off than he is. ]
Reconciling the desires of those who are no longer with us with the pain that stirs in our hearts- That has ever been the challenge of humanity and gods alike. [She smiles weakly.] But she chose you as family. And so, beyond the shadow of a doubt, I know this is a challenge you are capable of overcoming.

[ He can't help it, he's just so fucking weak to sweet-tempered blondes.
As he crosses an arm over his chest, hand wrapping up into his armpit, the other rises to rub a hand briskly across his face. A faint pink flush on his cheeks, at the earnest words coming from a goddess as powerful as Ereshkigal. It's all he can do, before her little digital representation is making contact with his; in the space, anything is possible within the limits of imagination-become-data-become-interactive, and the brush of his deep, dark divinity against her own is light a storm suddenly crashing to life in the distance. It's burning hot as a desert in the daylight, and bitterly cold as the same environment under the moon.
No wonder Ereshkigal and Quetzalcoatl were companions, even one time.
For a moment, he holds her hands cautiously in his own. Letting himself really listen and absorb her words. Because his domain is so deeply entwined with that of death, is it any wonder he feels a natural affinity towards such gods as her? Is it any wonder he had proudly, happily served Osiris for millennia, and strains toward Anubis every day? The quiet he harbors is severe, it runs so deep that it must be the truth of him โ moreso than the boasting, the sarcasm and ferocious defiance he reveals more often.
Still, after he nods his head to indicate he's truly heard her, he extricates a hand in order to flick her right between her eyebrows. WHACK. ]
Speak for yourself. She was your companion, as you said. You two must have had some incredible times together, enough that you will mourn her just as much as I. And yet! Here you are, the greatest goddess of Sumer, lamenting that you are not cute enough in the eyes of others and being bullied by mortals! Speak of your own challenges!
[ things got too serious time to nuke the mood a little before someone ends up crying ( him, definitely..... ) ]

[ W-What the Kรปr? Why would he do that? Why is it every time she has a serious and dignified moment, something or someone has to come and ruin it?! Is her luck really that abysmal? Is she really that uncharismatic? ]

[ Okay, time to put all of her confidence together (she can go cry in her room after), endure the stress for a few minutes (she'll break down when nobody can see her) and put on the evil dark goddess act (if it works). Sure, it had been only a flick, but it hurt! And she's not going to stand for anyone daring to do such a thing to her, god or not. ]
My challenges are for me alone to know. I will not tolerate to have them questioned.
[ She will definitely add him to her shit list along with Tezca if she has to. It would be a shame because they had been getting along so far, and the last thing she wants is to make an enemy of someone upon whom Quetzalcoatl had bestowed her affection. But she knows gods and she won't allow for such disrespect. ]
I once brought low the Sumerian god of War, and unto me did he divest himself of half his divine authority - a fair price for his sins. I shall not hesitate to bring that same fate unto his counterpart from another pantheon if I deem it necessary. Do not mistake my compassion for weakness.

That attitude is much better. Save your compassion for others, little queen; someone like me will do no good with it.
[ Even if it's an act from her, the feistiness she's showing is much better ( to him ) than the gentle compassion. The gentle, heartfelt things she said to him stir at his core in a way that is less a comfort, and more an undeserved kindness. Quetzalcoatl had loved him, and deeply, and sharing her fate with another goddess whom had known her was his way of ensuring she's not forgotten. Even if the worst comes to be and humanity does not remember her, and he is alone when he returns to Egypt despite that she'd vowed to accompany him โ at least he's not mourning her alone.
It's the weight of it that makes him act up, frivolous and desperate to make himself appear less fragile. Less in need of kindness. He's an evil god, after all. The ruin of Egypt and its people and divinities. Still, there's a casual sort of fondness in his mocking expression as he regards Ereshkigal. Gods just Get It, where mortals do not! ]
Does that mean your domains extend to war, Ereshkigal? I will not be able to take such a challenge and turn a blind eye to it, if you declare it so. [ He'll ambush her another time, and put her skills to the test ( yay! ), he decides. Fighting a goddess of her qualities might be a good test, even if he is heavily demoted โ if he can outmaneuver and defeat her, he might stand a chance against his own brother! ]

Do not call me little queen.
[ She would tolerate it if this came from her destined love(?) but not from a foreign god who just insulted her. ]
No. Nergal saw fit to give me his authority over diseases and the sun. [Thank goodness, because then she'd be even more like her sister.] And I shall not hesitate to preemptively make use of the former should I sense any hostile intents from you.
[ She doesn't care if anyone calls it "unfun" or "boring." She doesn't like fighting and if he's going to try and challenge her, she'll just use whatever means to ensure ]
