Yes, that's pretty much it.
Only humans don't really call them "mates".
I used to do that and my friends told me it was pretty weird.
We call them "partners" or "spouses" or "boyfriends" or whatever, but it's the same end goal.
Not necessarily resulting in kids, but you know.
